The Zone Diet has been around since around 1995, when fatty acids research scientist Dr. Barry Sears published the New York Times bestseller “The Zone”. This book was aimed at other doctors but it was found rather quickly by the general public. Since that time he has authored several other books on the subject. The Zone can be summed up as a state of hormonal balance in the body which can be achieved by your diet. It is especially about keeping key hormone’s in a balanced zone since the wrong amount in your body can trigger weight gain. This hormonal control is at the center of the Zone Diet. In fact, a craving for Carbohydrate’s is essentially a byproduct of making bad hormonal choices at meals. But when you make Zone Diet meals, the real cause of these cravings will be largely subdued.

Dr. Sears states that current health care for most people primarily focuses on treating symptoms, as opposed to the maintenance of wellness. Results from the Zone diet tend to occur right away because your blood sugar is automatically stabilized. Thus, you feel less hungry and more energized throughout the day.

There are several fundamental principles of the Zone Diet, according to Dr. Sears.

First, be certain that every meal leads you to the Zone by eating the correct combination of low-fat protein (such as lean chicken or pork), the right type of carbohydrate such as fruits and/or vegetables (starchy carbohydrates such as breads or potatoes are not as good), and a dash of “good” fat (such as olive oil). He says it is a good idea to eat a Zone meal within about an hour of waking up in the morning. It is also good to eat 5 times a day.

And you should not let more than 5 hours go by without a Zone meal, even if you are not hungry. This keeps your blood sugar levels stable. Another important principle is to drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water every day (about a half gallon).

And finally, remember that if you get off of - remove track, do not worry because there is not guilt in the Zone. Just make sure that your next meal is a Zone meal to get you back where you belong.

In the Zone, no foods are completely off limits. “That means you can eat anything, as long as it has the right balance of protein, carbs, and fat”, says Dr. Sears. Wine is even allowable because of the substantial amount of antioxidants it contains.

Do any of the fad diets out there, like the zone diet, work? I see them on television, in magazine, and on line: ads for the latest and greatest fad diet. Each one claims to have the answer to easy weight loss. Such fads are the price we pay for living in an obese capitalist society, but do any of them work? Statistically, those who use fad diets gain back their weight or even more weight 90% of the time.

One of the most popular recent fad diets to hit the mainstream is the zone diet. The zone diet, not unlike many of the recent fad diets, is based on carbohydrate intake. The diet is based on proportions of protein, fat, and carbohydrates. In addition, it is based on the idea of favorable or unfavorable types of each of those dietary components.

The biggest draw back to the zone diet is that it is very restrictive and structures. In the zone diet, you are to have five meals and two snacks per day. You are supposed to eat within an hour of getting up in the morning, eat regularly, and not eat more than 500 calories at one time. The zone diet’s “rules” make it so that the dieter’s life forever revolves around the food and eating.

The next issue with the zone diet is the learning curve involved. When you have to basically get a full dietary education in order to work a diet, then success is that much more difficult to reach. You have to learn things like how much food it in one “block” of protein, fat, and carb. You also have to know how to combine them and know a fair amount about glycemic loads in carbohydrates.

The alternative would be to have a sensible low calorie diet, work out a few times a week, and drink plenty of water. You don’t have to take the time to schedule precise meal times and a masters in dietary chemistry is unnecessary. With the zone diet, you will be constantly in calculation of your blocks and meals and combos. Isn’t it just easier to work out, eat sensibly, and enjoy your life a little more?

Fad diets are a tempting trend. Each one claims a quick fix to your weight problems. The all claim to be easy, but each ends up requiring you to read extensively and stay on a strict schedule. Making the switch in lifestyle to just eating less and working out more will allow you to, in moderation, eat the things you enjoy and to gain the overall health benefits of increased muscle tone, hormone production, and sense of well being. So don’t fall into the trap set by fads like the zone diet. We live in an obese and capitalist society, but here is a free way to stay out of the world of obesity: eat well, work out often, and love yourself.

The Zone Diet consists of watching what you eat to maintain proper insulin and is similar to the concepts of low-glycemic dietary principals. Barry Sears, a former researcher in biotechnology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, believes that controlling the levels of insulin will lead to a health happy life.

Another concept in the Zone Diet is the natural maintenance of eicosanoids. These are hormone like compounds formed by body tissues during self-healing responses to stimuli. They are formed from highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) that we acquire only by eating essential fatty acids (EFA) in foods or supplements.

The Zone is achieved when insulin and hormone levels are in a balanced state of homeostasis. If insulin levels aren’t too high, or two low, findings suggest that other hormone levels also find a better balance which results in better energy and a better feeling of a sense of wellness.

The principals of the Zone Diet suggest a moderate intake of protein, fat and carbohydrates. All carbs should come from low-glycemic sources which take longer to absorb and therefore induce a more mild insulin response. All fat sources should come from high quality fats, of fish and vegetable origins, but again they should be unprocessed whenever possible. The processing done to make vegetable oils (fats) generally serves to make them more harmful than unprocessed fats from the same sources.

Because most people are challenged to obtain high-quality levels of good dietary fats, the Zone Diet recommends that supplements of fish oils be utilized. When selecting a fish oil supplement, make sure that it is third party certified to be free of toxins. A process called “molecular distillation” has been proven to safely extract the essential fatty acids and leave all other toxins behind. If you do not choose a fish oil that is proven to be toxin free, you could be at risk of ingesting heavy metals and other industrial toxins which are stored in the fat tissues of cold water fish.

Overall there isn’t a substantial amount of medical evidence to support Dr Sears’ theories for the Zone Diet although many have claimed that the diet has worked well for them. Principals of low-glycemic eating, which overlap some of the Zone Diet recommendations, have been clinically proven to lower cholesterol and improve insulin response, so there is good science that overlaps with the Zone Diet. Might this be the right diet for you? Do you own research and then consult a doctor before making any dietary change in case you happen to have any risk factors which might put you in danger.

The Zone diet helps in loosing weight slowly and maintaining an ideal weight. It is recommended to manage blood sugar level. It is a calorie restricted plan. The zone diet is consuming calories in a balanced ratio of 40:30: 30. One way of recognizing a fad diet is said to be the promise of multiple miraculous effects upon health. And Zone diet promises a lot.

“Why is the Zone diet so controversial?”

“Beats me!”

Extract from an interview with Dr. Barry Sears, by Harper&Collins Publishers

Five cover promises

At first glance, Barry Sears’ first published book “Enter The Zone” has the following main points:

Lose weight permanently

Reset your genetic code

Prevent disease

Achieve your maximum physical performance

Enhance your mental productivity

These five statements should make us buy. I think I would buy if only one of them were true, point three, preventing disease.

How can a diet not be controversial when it says it can “prevent diseases”? But, to be fair, Dr Sears provides further details of his ambiguous statement somewhere between the covers of the bestseller. We find out that Zone diet can help to:

prevent type II diabetes, as Zone diet is nothing more than permanent and accurate insulin control through food we ingest

prevent cardiovascular diseases (cardiomyopathy, arthritis, artherosclerosis, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia)

prevent or cure “mental diseases” such as depression and alcoholism

restore energy in conditions such as CMS, PMS or even HIV infections

prevent cancer development and make antibodies fight tumors with greater success.

I really want to believe Zone can be that magic recipe that can help me live a longer and healthier life, without too much effort. But I expected some scientific proof for all these promises. And what did I find instead? Some stories about people who successfully solved their problems by following Zone diet, and their everlasting gratitude to diet guru Barry Sears! I’m sorry, but I’m not buying that.

Of course, there are some good aspects of the Zone diet. It promotes healthy eating standards and gives some common-sense advice. Somewhere, on the publishing road (more precisely with “Omega RX Zone — The miracle of high-dose fish oil”), Dr. Sears advises us not to make any radical change in our dietary program without consulting a trained physician.

But I think there are still many things that need to be proven in the Zone. If it really does work the way it promises, mankind should go beyond such problems as illness.

The Zone Diet is founded on the idea of eating a balanced ratio of carbohydrate, protein and fat. By eating in the ratio of 40/30/30, meaning 40 percent carbohydrate and 30 percent each of protein and fat, the idea is that your metabolism is impacted to run at its most efficient level. The diet also emphasizes getting the right amounts of fruit, vegetables and lean sources of protein. The right combination of foods results in an increased metabolism and weight loss. Designing meals that meet these requirements can be tricky, but the program offers a range of ideas. You can also purchase cookbooks with recipes intended for the followers of the diet as well. But some people still wonder what they are allowed to drink when following the diet.

You can still drink juice and either low fat or skim milk, as long as you count the calories and grams of protein, fat and carbohydrates. But since our bodies are made mostly of water, water is the recommended drink. The health benefits of drinking enough water cannot be underestimated. Water helps to flush toxins out of the body, it keeps the cells and metabolism supplies with the water needed to work properly and it quenches thirst better than any other fluid you can ingest. The Zone Diet guidelines require that followers drink at least sixty-four ounces (or eight cups) of fluid every day. If you are one of the many people who simply don’t like the taste of water, there are other options for you.

You can add a squeeze of lemon, lime or orange to your water to give it a little bit of extra flavor. Or, you can purchase bottled waters that have a slightly fruity flavoring to them so that they taste more like a seltzer than plain water. Pour them in a glass full of ice for a refreshing beverage. It’s important, however, to read the labels, even for water. Since the Zone Diet guidelines require you to limit sugar and carbohydrates, you don’t want to take in sugar unknowingly. Carry a bottle of water with you wherever you go and refill it whenever it gets empty. Soon enough you can change your habit of drinking soda, tea or juice, especially when you see the good results in your weight loss efforts.

If you are a coffee or tea drinker, you will need to make some changes as well. The Zone Diet guidelines instruct you to eliminate caffeine from your diet. This change can be difficult and cause withdrawal symptoms like headaches. It might be a good idea to gradually start eliminating caffeine from your diet in the weeks before you begin following the Zone Diet guidelines. Decaffeinated coffee or tea will let you still enjoy the taste of coffee or tea without the caffeine. The same is true of sodas. Regular sodas should be completely eliminated. They simply have too much sugar. Diet sodas come in enough different flavors that you should be able to find one that you like. However, you do need to switch to decaffeinated versions in order to improve your chances of success on the program.

Alcohol is one other beverage that will have to be limited or eliminated. There have been some studies that have shown that moderate alcohol consumption can actually have some positive effects on your health, particularly your heart. If you are currently drinking alcohol as part of a program to protect your cardiovascular health, you shouldn’t stop without discussing it with a health professional first. However, the Zone Diet doesn’t require that you totally eliminate all alcohol from your routine, just that you limit it to occasional use. There’s no reason that you can’t continue to enjoy an alcoholic beverage from time to time. Just keep in mind that the more beverages that you replace with water, the more good you are doing for your body and the faster you are likely to see weight loss success.

The ZonePerfect Nutrition Company has continued to expand and is expected to sell in excess of one hundred million dollars worth of ZonePerfect foods this year. These include Zone diet bars, Zone diet meals, protein shakes and powders, supplements and fish oil capsules to be used as supplements. While these products are labeled as Zone Diet products, Dr. Sears does not agree that they are following the Zone Diet principles, and he is not endorsing several of the products.

In fact, Dr. Barry Sears is endorsing a new product called Smart Zone which is a meal supplement bar produced by Hersheys. There have been several lawsuits regarding the use of the Dr. Sears implied endorsement of ZonePerfect products. Dr. Sears is very clear that he does not endorse these products despite the fact that they use the ZonePerfect name.

What is the issue?

Dr. Barry Sears now operates a company called Zone Labs. They have the only Zone Diet products that Dr. Sears endorses at this time.

The concern with the non-endorsed products is that while they appear to be the Zone products, they are not correctly chemically balanced to control insulin. Since the whole premise of the Zone Diet is to eat foods that will help your body control the hormones that produce and regular insulin it is very important that the chemical composition of the food is exactly correct.

Dr. Sears explains that a diet bar can be a prime example of how things can appear to be Zone foods but are not chemically balanced to work with the program. There are many nutrition bars that are composed of a 40/30/30 balance of proteins, carbohydrates and fat. The fat in Zone bars comes from fish oil that actually helps the body slow down the production of insulin and prevents hunger and cravings. Other nutrition bars have the 40/30/30 ratio but they use flaxseed or soybean oils that don’t have the same chemical composition. This oil does nothing to help the body with insulin control and will result in hunger and cravings.

What does Dr. Sears endorse?

At the moment, Dr. Sears endorses some nutritional supplements that include:

fish oil concentrates that act to optimize heart, brain and immune system functions as well as help with the hormonal control of insulin production.

bars and shakes that are available for on-the-go meals and snacks. These bars and shakes follow the 40/30/30 ratio and have the added benefit of the omega fish oil for insulin control.

nutritional supplements used to increase energy and decrease muscle stiffness and fatigue after exercise.

liquid supplements that provide the vitamins and minerals found in 2-3 servings of fruit and vegetables. They are supposedly high in anti-oxidants that rid the body of free radicals.

An additional line of supplements for body and skeletal health that includes cardio support, bone supplement, hepatic support for detoxification and Zone foundation and micro nutritional support.

Apparently, the only meal that is endorsed by Dr. Sears as a Zone diet product is a new line of frozen dinners he has developed with a producer of organic and natural frozen dinners. They are designed to be cooked in a microwave and enjoyed.

Whether all these products are endorsed by the doctor himself or not, the fact is that the business of Zone Diet is flourishing and people are buying these supplements and meals to make sure they stay in the Zone. However, one may begin to wonder if it is really necessary to consume all these products to stay healthy or it is more a matter of changing dietary habits and enjoying healthier food.

Many people opt to lose weight by using the Zone diet. This diet is different from diets such as Atkins and South Beach Diet because of the fact that Zone emphasizes a ratio which consists of the three main nutrients (carbs, proteins, fats). Is this diet the one you want to follow or is it just another fad diet that will disappear after another year or so?

The basis for the Zone diet is that if a person eats the right amount of carbs, proteins, and fats, then the person will improve their health drastically. This diet calls for a ratio of 40/30/30 (carbs, proteins, fats) because certain hormones will be balanced to give you the body of your dreams. The founder of this diet, Ph.D Barry Sears states, “The American public is overweight due to a high intake of carbohydrates, and that this style of eating causes an overproduction of insulin. The solution is to eat a lower carb, higher protein, and moderate fat diet to balance these hormones within the preferred zone.”

So how does the Zone diet compare with other diets? The Zone diet is quick to point out that this diet works primarily because of its low calories, not their magic ratio of macronutrients. This diet does not prohibit any foods, but restricts foods that are high in fat and carbs such as starches, grains, and pastas. Other diets either emphasize a low carb or low fat option, the Zone diet simply uses both nutrients, just in a smaller percentage.

This diet is actually not bad compared to some of the lower carb diets available. The Zone diet does have its weak areas considering some of the recipes are full of nutritional misinformation. Another problem Zone has is that it suggests impractical food combinations such as beer and cottage cheese in one meal. Despite these prolems, go ahead and try Zone for yourself and find out if it works for you. Until next time, later.

With all the low carb diets out there it can be difficult to ascertain which one is right for you, and even what the differences between all of them are! Low carb diets are all the rage, and they have proven to be very effective. But, which one do you choose? Which one is right for you? Are they all the same? These are all fair questions, and we’ll attempt to clarify the differences in all three of these popular diets so that you can choose the one that is right for you!

The Atkins Diet

The book is an affordable $14.95 for the paperback version, making this program affordable, for starters. The Atkins diet was also the first and the most successful low carb diet, which is attractive for those that want a diet with a history. Basically, the Atkins diet is all about high protein, high fat, low carb, and low sugar. If you are worried about being able to prepare the foods and snacks, Atkins offers a whole line of controlled carb snacks and has Atkins brand foods like Endulge, as well as shakes and pasta side dishes. Atkins is so popular that it has major national restaurants such as Subway and even TGI Friday’s offering Atkins approved items on their menus.

The high fat content of the diet has earned the Atkins diet a lot of criticism because the large amount of red meat, dairy products, and butter leaves many with higher LDL cholesterol rates, leading to clogged arteries. This may or may not be true for you, but what is true is the first phase of the diet allows no more than 20 grams of carbohydrates per day! No fruit, bread, grains, starchy veggies, or caffeine! Eventually you’ll be able to eat some of these things again, but giving it all up can be rough! This is definitely not a good diet pick for vegetarians but is great for those that love red meat, fish, eggs, and salad.

The South Beach Diet

The South Beach Diet book will run about $25 and is considered to be much like the Atkins diet, but has been successful because it is easier to understand, better organized and simply a better read. The South Beach Diet is also more flexible than the Atkins diet, which many find appealing. It’s true that The South Beach Diet also has a two week induction period where you will eliminate most carbs, but it is low in saturated fats and high in fiber.

The problem with South Beach is that it isn’t really the healthiest program, though you will lose weight. The problem is that it encourages the consumption of processed foods, which isn’t good for long term health. While the induction period doesn’t allow alcohol, fatty meats, pasta, sugar, sugary vegetables, fruits and fruit juices, cookies, potatoes, milk and ice cream, healthy carbs will be allowed back into the diet in subsequent phases. South Beach is very specific about what should and should not be eaten, which is different than the Atkins Diet. If you love pasta, this isn’t the diet for you, but if you are a lover of eggs, lean meats, fish, nuts, and ricotta cheese you’ll love this diet!

The Zone Diet

The Zone has been around since 1995, and is a diet that is composed of 40% carbs, 30% fat, and 30% protein. The diet was originally created to increase the performance of athletes and will require a lot of math to figure how much of each thing you will need to eat!

The Zone doesn’t allow high glycemic index carbs such as white bread and sugary goods as well as egg yolks, deli meats, and fatty red meats. It’s been said that Jennifer Aniston and Renee Zellweger are firm believers of the Zone.

This simply is not a good diet for you if you want a simple diet with simple instructions, but works for those that want a very obsessive compulsive diet that will allow you to control every portion exactly as prescribed. Simply put, the Zone Diet is very complicated!
